Senator Louis P. Bertonazzi Foundation - Outstanding Teacher AwardThe Senator Louis P. Bertonazzi Foundation is a charitable organization created by Senator Bertonazzi to express his commitment to the betterment and enrichment of the culture, citizenship, and education of the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Each year, the Foundation honors an educator in the Milford School System with its Outstanding Teacher Award. Nominees for the award are recommended by the school councils in the Milford public school system. The criteria for selection includes includes innovative and effective teaching methods, concern for students over and above those of normal, everyday teaching, contributions to the reputation of the Milford schools and involvement in activities relating to and contributing to the improvement of the education of the youth of Milford.
Nominations by the school councils are submitted to a selection committee comprised of a school administrator and seven members of the community. The prestigious award carries a $1,000 cash prize for the recipient. Nominees not selected are honored with a plaque.
Citizens at large are invited to participate in the nomination process for the award. Citizen Recommendation forms are available on this website and also will be available at the principals’ offices in the various school buildings. For the recommendation to be considered, completed Citizen Recommendation forms must be submitted to the nominee's building principal by the 2nd Friday in January.
Previous award winners are Arthur Caswell, Carrie Brandt, John Costantino, Jo-Ann Morgan, Karen Wilson, Kevin Maines, Frances Morcone, Francesca Pessotti, James McCallum, Tony Niro, Al DiFonzo, Pam Hunter, Marion Tobin and Maryann Hanley-Pereira, Jennifer Walsh, Robert Gilmore.
The Foundation, in conjunction with the Milford Italian-American War Veterans Post, also contributes to an “Italian Studies” award presented annually by the Milford Order of the Sons of Italy to a Milford High School student who excels in Italian language studies, and makes a “Citizenship Award” bi-annually to the community among the towns formerly represented by Senator Bertonazzi with the best voter participation.
