Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Maryann Hanley-Pereira
My name is Maryann Hanley-Pereira and I am teaching Chemistry I Honors and Chemistry College Prep during the 2015-2016 school year. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a few things about myself and the classes that will be taught.
I have been a secondary school teacher for the past thirty four years. I have taught a variety of courses including life science, physical science, biology, oceanography, microbiology, health science and chemistry. I truly enjoy what I do and feel that in these changing technological times it is essential that each person have a good background in the sciences.
Prior to teaching I went to the University of Rhode Island where I graduated with a B.A. in Biology and Secondary Education. I have forty five credits past my B.A. mostly in the area of mathematics and chemistry. I also have a M.S. in Education from the University of New England.
My mission in the classroom is very straightforward. I believe that every student is an individual who should be treated with respect and dignity. In return I expect the same courtesy. Each student will be empowered to maintain an “I can do it” attitude not only in chemistry but in all areas of life. I want students to be responsible human beings who should choose to succeed. Failure should not be part of their repertoire. High expectations will be set in all areas of academics and behavior. Fairness, mutual respect, hard work, and clarity of objectives will be part of the classroom atmosphere.
Students will receive a syllabus, study guidelines and notebook directions during the first week of the semester. These papers should be signed by both the student and parent and returned to school. It is recommended that a binder with paper, five dividers, a scientific calculator, and something to write with should be brought to each class.
Our grading program, the family portal, will be updated with grades on a regular basis in order to keep both parents and students aware of student grades in each of my classes. I will also be updating the my teacher webpages as part of the Milford High School website on a regular basis to inform everyone about what is happening in the classroom , what assignments are due, and what assessments are upcoming.
Thank you for your support. I look forward to a rewarding and productive school year.
