    English Language Learner Department Philosophy

    The mission of the English Language Learner Program in the Milford Public Schools is to provide instruction to English Language Learner (ELL) students, designed specifically to incorporate academic language within the four language domains (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in conjunction with subject matter content.  This content-based English Language Development (ELD) program combination will enable ELL students to become successful individuals in the mainstream classroom, overall school environment, and community at large.

    English Language Learner Expectations for Student Learning

     
    Enrollment into specific ESL and/or SE classes requires student enrollment in the program, placement interview, placement testing and consent of the instructor. Students who have taken ESL or SEI classes at MHS need to be enrolled in the program and have the consent of the instructor to be enrolled in a specific class.
     
     
    Advanced
     
    Students consistently demonstrate advanced knowledge of the five skills in English; Speaking, Listening, Reading, Pronunciation and Writing.
    Students recognize and fulfill their duties as students and citizens.
    Students demonstrate full respect for cultural diversity, themselves, and others.
     
    Proficient
    Students consistently demonstrate adequate knowledge of the five skills in English; Speaking, Listening, Reading, Pronunciation and Writing.
    Students recognize and fulfill to some degree their duties as students and citizens.
    Students demonstrate an awareness and appreciation for cultural diversity, themselves, and others.
     
    Needs Improvement
