Ms. Joanne Sabo

My name is Joanne Sabo and I am the teacher for the “Rainbow Classroom” which is a communication-based, multisensory program, for children with medical and multiple challenges including sensory loss issues. This is my tenth year teaching and I absolutely love what I do. I received a Master’s degree in severe special needs with a specialization in deafblindness from Boston College in 2005 and in May 2009 I received an Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) in Assistive Special Education Technology from Simmons College. I completed a state deafblind advisor-training project in 2010. I have taken professional development/grad courses relating to "Individualized Education Programs for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired including those with Additional Disabilities"as well as continuing cousework in "Assistive Technology and Universal Design: Leveling the Playing Field Together" through Lesley University. This past year I attended the MDSC and the AT conference of New England. This past spring I completed by Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) course requirement. 

I love creating educational materials using technology and incorporating technology into the curriculum. Finding appropriate apps. for the iPads has become my obsession over the last couple of years. I am excited by the concept of universal design for learning as it promotes optimal educational opportunities for all students by providing meaningful access through multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement. 

My family includes my husband, two children, aged 19 and 21. My oldest is in his 4th year of college and my daughter is a sophomore in college. I lived in three other states: Connecticut, Florida, and Kentucky before coming to Massachusetts. 

My current hobbies/interests include: walking (especially on the beach), yoga, creating perennial gardens for the purpose of attracting butterflies and hummingbirds, writing creatively, and using social media as a means to develop professional learning networks and to participate and share in online learning opportunities.
