Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Marilyn Gilman
"Poetry: the best words in the best order." Samuel Taylor Coleridge
My name is Marilyn Gilman and I teach English language arts on the 6-Red team at Stacy Middle School. I received my bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut and my master's degree from Framingham State University. I am both certified and highly qualified in English grades 5-8 and Elementary Education grades 1-6.
Before becoming a teacher, I was an advertising copywriter for a chain of women's specialty stores headquartered in Newport News, Virginia. With four children of my own, one of my greatest joys has been expanding our family by hosting exchange students from around the world - Mexico, Germany, Italy, and France. This sharing of cultures has been an enriching experience for all of us and has offered me a new perspective on the teaching of English.
My classroom objective is to enhance every child's literacy skills through the instruction of writing and literature, as well as the study of spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. My students' writing portfolios and classroom journals make for some very interesting reading, and they will go home at the end of the school year. You won't want to miss reading what's on their minds, as well as a broad sample of academic writing.
"I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions." James Michener
