 Social Emotional Learning Department

The Social Emotional Learning Department consists of 2, district-wide bilingual social workers, 17 adjustment counselors and 2 Attendance Supervisors. We recognize that academic success is intricately linked with emotional well-being, and thus, we strive to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where every student feels heard, valued, and supported. Through a comprehensive approach, we offer a range of services and resources tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual, empowering them to navigate life's challenges with resilience and confidence. At the heart of our mission is a commitment to fostering emotional intelligence, building healthy relationships, and promoting self-awareness, equipping our students with essential skills for lifelong success.

Our Adjustment Counselors play a vital role in providing tiered intervention support across our district, ensuring that every student receives the assistance they need to thrive. Each school has one bilingual counselor dedicated to supporting English Learner (EL) students and their families. Our instructional model is dynamic and collaborative, as counselors at the Elementary and Middle School co-teach lessons with classroom teachers, focusing on skill-building aligned with the CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) competencies to build Tiered 1 support. During the 2022-2023 school year, we started to  implement the Responsive Classroom approach throughout our PreK-2 schools, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.

We also offer a range of individual and group sessions from K-12 to address diverse needs, covering topics such as friendship, self-regulation, social skills, and coping with loss. Through these sessions, we aim to provide personalized support that empowers students to navigate challenges, develop resilience, and build healthy relationships. Our commitment to comprehensive, evidence-based interventions ensures that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our bilingual social workers  play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the educational system and external support services. They act as a central point of contact for families and schools, ensuring that students have access to the resources they need for both academic and social-emotional success. Their responsibilities include connecting families with services, collaborating with various stakeholders, providing consultation and training to staff, attending student focused meetings and facilitating communication between different agencies.

The Attendance Supervisors work in partnership with school staff members, students and families to support school attendance. They provide resources to families, conduct home visits and serve as a liaison for community programs, such as the Juvenile Court System.
