 English Learner (EL) Program 

Welcome to Milford Public Schools’ English Learner (EL) Program Website!  My name is Jenn Noorjanian, the PreK-12 EL Program Director. Milford's EL program is designed to teach culturally and linguistically diverse students as they work toward English proficiency in both academic subjects and social settings.  Language is taught across all four language domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) within every content-area Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) classroom and explicitly in the English language development (ELD) classroom. Our district currently has over 1,170 PreK–12 English learners, roughly 28% of the district's total student population, who add rich diversity and perspectives to our classrooms. Students are from 21 different countries and speak 20+ different languages.  The top countries of birth for our ELs are the USA, Brazil, and Ecuador.  The most represented languages are Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish (together accounting for 95% of our first-language-not-English [FLNE] student households). We are privileged to have highly qualified, licensed English as a Second Language (ESL) and endorsed SEI teachers, as well as ESL Teaching Assistants (TAs), to effectively instruct our EL student population.  In addition, we have a district Translation and Interpretation Coordinator, three in-district interpreters (one Portuguese and one Spanish), two Title III Bilingual Parent Liaisons (one Portuguese and one Spanish), and a Family Welcome Center EL Test Administrator.
