English Learner Program
English Learner (EL) Program
Welcome to Milford Public Schools’ English Learner (EL) Program Website! My name is Jenn Noorjanian, the PreK-12 EL Program Director. Milford's EL program is designed to teach our culturally and linguistically diverse students English in both academic subjects and social settings. Language is taught across all four language domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) within every content-area SEI classroom and explicitly in the English language development classroom. Our district currently has over 1,600 PreK–12 English learners, roughly 32% of the district's total student population, who add rich diversity and new perspectives to our classrooms. They are from 21 different countries and speak 20+ different languages. The greatest represented countries of birth of our EL students are the USA, Brazil, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Haiti, and Egypt. The greatest represented languages are Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish (consisting of 96% of our first language not English [FLNE] student households). We are privileged to have highly qualified, licensed English as a Second Language (ESL) and endorsed Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) teachers and ESL Teaching Assistants (TA) to instruct our EL population effectively. In addition, we have a district Translation and Interpretation Coordinator, a Family Resource Center EL Test Administrator, two in-district interpreters (one Portuguese and one Spanish), and Title III Bilingual Parent Liaisons (one Portuguese, one Spanish, and one Haitian-Creole).
Please use the links on the sidebar to access information regarding different components of the EL program. Useful documents, articles, resources, forms, etc., for families and teachers can be found. Also, on the left side of this website page, you will find links to other interesting EL resources.
Please remember that Milford Public Schools' website allows you to “translate” any of our web pages into many different languages. There may be limitations to using a software program for translations; if you need help understanding the posted information, please email or contact your child’s teacher for clarification.
Sincerely,
Jenn Noorjanian
